Pros: Seemed to work for the first month
Cons: First off I had a pair of Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB, which are listed as compatible drives, and the ix2 device would not use them. I looked up compatible drives on the Lenovo Website and saw these Seagate drives were listed as compatible so I did a factory reset and got the same result. I had another use fo these drives so I ordered a pair of Hitachi HDS5C3020ALA632 drives, I did a factory reset and every thing worked for about 6 months and the ix2 reported on of the drives had failed. I downloaded the Hitachi diagnostic software and ran on the failed drive. Everything tested good. Tested the other drive thinking the ix2 maybe reported the wrong drive, everything tested good. Could not return the HDS5C3020ALA632 drives since they pass all the diagnostics. Got a pair of WD Red 2TB (WD20EFRX) NAS drives, I did a factory reset and ix2 still reports a drive failure.
Other Thoughts: Would never order another Lenovo NAS of any type. My research indicated this may be an Iomega product. Never had good luck with Iomega products, so that would explain it all.
Pros: Easy setup
Cons: Lost of data when first inserted to device. No option to stop this.
Other Thoughts: Would not recommend for anything important.
Pros: Dead simple to set up. Good set of features for the price. Feel solidly built. Small footprint, but still seems to have plenty of air flow. Price is great.
Cons: Web interface is a bit sluggish, but manageable. There is no native way to sync one NAS to another over the Internet, and at the price point I'm not complaining. They are only 2 bays?
Other Thoughts: I honestly was surprised at how happy I was was with these. I bought two and sync them across town with BT sync using computers as the connection. I have been using Rapberry Pi boards connected to a USB drive to sync data (and still do), but these might start replacing some of them were a computer is on already. At work we tend to go with ReadyNAS devices, if these had a native BT Sync client, we would switch to these.
Pros: Good price. Case is decent quality. After modification it seems to be running fine.
Cons: After using it for awhile with two 2tb drives, I put two 3tb drives in it. The fan did not sufficiently cool the drives and the case was quite warm to touch. The NAS gave a warning that one drive went bad and was unreadable. I took the drive out and put it in a computer and found that the drive was not bad, but the data was lost. I formatted the drive and used in in a PC for awhile with no problems.
Then I decided to modify the case and add a second fan. Not easy as the case is small, but I put a fan in it. Now the case is always cool to touch. And then I put the 'failed' 3tb drive back in and has been working fine.
One more thing, and this bothers me the most: If the hardware fails, I coulnd not figure out any way to read the data on the drives. When I took the two mirrored 2tb drives out, I tried to read them with a Windows 7 computer and with a Linux computer. The drive configuration seems only readable by the Lenovo hardware and nothing else. I'm still wondering what a person would do if the board went out but the drives were still OK.
Other Thoughts: Wish I knew why the hard disk drives that were in the NAS can't be read by other operating systems.
Pros: Installed a HD that is on the approved list. Set up the drive in 15 minutes. Seamless. Nice and easy setup for the novice installer, and a snap for network heavy and VMWare experts.
Saw the drive right away & is ready for use.
Cons: None as of yet. Will go in and write more if needed due to failures, freezups, or glitches on this NAS.
Other Thoughts: A need to know how to navigate through the dashboard is recommended. Its like using a domain console to set custom configurations. I really like this interface.
Pros: Quiet, doesn't draw much power (Power Adapter is rated for 36 Watts max) and the speeds are reasonably good considering the featureset and how much you'd pay for this NAS Enclosure.
Despite using blue LEDs for hard drive activity, the LEDs are not bright at all. Good for light sensitive sleepers such as myself.
Software download not required on host PC to set up this NAS. Can simply point web browser at the IP given to the NAS to configure everything.
Cons: Documentation that comes with the hardware is next to useless. Be prepared to have to download online PDFs and look through their help guides. Case in point, there is ZERO information on how to install drives included with the NAS. (Lift front cover panel straight up from the bottom to remove. Something I was afraid to try before I saw how to do it because I didn't want to break any plastic by forcing something.)
The firmware does have some usability quirks.
If you insert drives that aren't blank, you may have to do a 'factory reset' within the Web interface (even after once going through setup) before the drives will be reformatted in the default Raid 1 mode. (Mirrored)
Anyone who buys this NAS expecting that they can pop in drives with content already on them clearly has never dealt with Raid systems. NEVER put anything in a Raiding system unless you are prepared to format.
Samba/Windows File Shares weren't recognized by my computer until I toggled the protocol off and then on again within the web interface. Once I did that, everything worked great.
Other Thoughts: I just wanted something simple, quiet and usable. This NAS, once I got past the quirks and copied everything over from backups, does the trick. I get a very consistent 22-25MB/sec write speed over Gigabit Ethernet in Raid 1 mode. Getting network mapped drives set up in Windows and Linux was a piece of cake. No strange delays or phantom disconnects with this NAS... which I did occasionally get with the one this one replaced.
I consider it a very solid 4 eggs considering how cheaply you can get one of these for and what you're able to get out of it.
Pros: If you’re looking for a good network storage system this is one you should look at. I’ve been using these drives for years.
Cons: nil
Other Thoughts: I don’t generally do reviews …..
Pros: streamed movies for two days
Cons: ruined hard drive in just 3 weeks. never had a problem until this nas.
Other Thoughts: run away from this nas
